Initiative Tracker -- Support Traded-Sector Industry Cluster Development

Objective 2: Maintain a long-term commitment to rural community development.

2004 Action Items

Accomplishments/Status

Ÿ The Governor should hire a rural policy advisor and create an advisory committee to support the new Office of Rural Policy.

Ÿ OECDD should establish regional and rural economic development plans that focus on near term job creation.

Ÿ The Department should invest at least 20% of the Strategic Investment resources on job creation projects in rural Oregon.

On April 21, 2004, the Governor announced the creation of the new Office of Rural Policy. The Governor is currently forming the advisory committee.

The Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (OECDD) was reorganized with teams focusing on Business Development, Community Development, and Capital Projects. Department staff, in each of the three teams, has been assigned to specific regions of the state, including all rural areas. HB 2011 extended the operation of the Community Solutions Team under a new name – the Governor's Economic Revitalization Team – and made it statutory. GERT is continuing to work on industrial site readiness statewide and engagement of local leadership to further rural economic development.
