The Economic Impact of Substance Abuse in Oregon:  A Conference for Policymakers

January 16, 2008, 8:30am-4:30pm, at Kaiser Town Hall, in Portland.  Conference fee is $35 and includes continental breakfast and buffet lunch.

Value-Based Purchasing and Employee Wellness:  

At the Leadership Summit Peggy Fowler discussed the important role employers can play in reducing health care costs by engaging their employees in wellness programs and by purchasing based on value.  

Using these strategies, companies such as Tektronix have gone down from double-digit annual rises to virtually no increase in health care costs.

Bi-State Metropolitan Forum:  Building a Healthy Economy for Oregon and Washington.  Thursday, March 16, 2006 8:30 am-3 at Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom, PSU  

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire will both be featured guests at the 2006 Bi-State Metropolitan Forum, “Building a Healthy Economy for Oregon and Washington,” hosted by the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies in the College of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University.   • July 25-28, 2005 -- Micro Nano Breakthrough Conference. Leaders in research, education, technology development, industry, government, business, and venture capital investments focus on development of micro and nano technology for new products.
  • May 12, 2005 -- 17th Annual Entrepreneurship Luncheon & Trade Show. This half-day event held at the Oregon Convention Center and hosted by the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME) is designed to help business leaders increase their networking with minority owned, women, and emerging small businesses, and sample their diverse products and services.
  • March 9-10, 2005 -- 2005 InnoTech Oregon Conference.  More than one thousand business and technology executives meet for two days of programs, workshops, and exhibits at the Oregon Convention Center all focused on economic innovation.
  • December 6, 2004 -- Leadership Summit 2004.  Business and elected leaders from across the state come together at the Oregon Convention Center to assess the strength of Oregon's economy and lay out a comprehensive state and federal action plan for 2005 and beyond.
  • November 18, 2004 -- Regional Planning & Business: Lessons from the Past, Strategies for the Future. Business leaders from around the greater Portland area join together at the DoubleTree Lloyd Center for a day dedicated to learning how other communities around the nation have improved on the "Metro Model" and how we can improve regional planning in Oregon.
  • November 12, 2004 -- Digitization of Healthcare Fall Summit. This conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Portland focuses on Oregon's health information infrastructure and the role of electronic health records as a driver of economic development.
  • October 1, 2004 -- Business Innovation & Law 2004. This all day conference at the Portland World Trade Center addresses several business climate topics including regulation and taxation. Speakers include Allen Alley (Pixelworks), Matt Chapman (Centrisoft), William Thorndike (Medford Fabrication), Dave Frohnmayer (University of Oregon), and Paul Kelly (Nike).
  • August 16-18 & 23-24, 2004 -- Oregon Business Plan Statewide Bus Tour. Members of the OBP Steering Committee and Senator Ron Wyden make stops in Medford, Klamath Falls, Bend, Eugene, Newport, The Dalles, Pendleton, La Grande, and John Day. At each stop, the OBP team partners with local hosts, including Chambers of Commerce, to hold forums focused on building partnerships among local and statewide efforts to create more quality jobs in Oregon.
  • August 13-15, 2004 -- The Bite of Oregon. After twenty years as the state’s largest food, beverage and music event, The Bite of Portland becomes...The Bite of Oregon. In conjunction with the state's "Brand Oregon" campaign, and on The Bite's 21st birthday, the festival re-introduces itself as the premier showcase of the epicurean and musical bounty of the state of Oregon.
  • July 28-29, 2004 -- Micro Nano Breakthrough Conference 2004. Sponsored by the Microproducts Breakthrough Institute (MBI) -- a collaboration between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Oregon State University -- this meeting is for researchers, technology developers, industrialists, venture capitalists, and others to share ideas, build collaborative networks, create working groups, and set agendas for developing new microproducts.
  • June 10, 2004 -- 5th Annual Early Childhood Advocates Forum. Oregon business, community, and elected leaders learn about the tie between early childhood development and economic development as Jack Levine (President, Advocacy Resources) and Art Rolnick (Senior VP & Director of Research, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank) speak about "Economic Development with a High Public Return: Early Childhood Development."
  • May 9-15, 2004 -- Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). Intel ISEF, held in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center, is the world’s largest pre-college science fair bringing together more than 1,400 of the brightest young scientists from 14 countries to compete for more than $3 million in awards and scholarships.
  • May 7, 2004 -- Oregon Beliefs & Branding Conference. A half-day event sponsored by the Portland and Salem chapters of the Public Relations Society of America, taking an in-depth look at the Oregon Values and Beliefs Survey as well as the State's Brand Oregon efforts.
  • April 28-29, 2004 -- Oregon's Forest Sector: Enhancing Its Economic Contribution and Its Relationship to Global Forest Sustainability. A two-day symposium, sponsored by the Oregon Forest Resources Institute and Oregon State University, to highlight opportunities for enhancing the contribution of Oregon's forest sector to the state's economy and examine the relationship with global forest sustainability.
  • May 6, 2004 -- 16th Annual Entrepreneurship Luncheon & Trade Show. Sponsored by the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, this annual Conference and Trade Show at the Oregon Convention Center is designed to help businesspeople increase their connections with minority owned companies and sample their diverse products and services.
  • March 31-April 1, 2004 -- InnoTech: Oregon's Business & Technology Innovation Conference & Exposition. Governor Kulongoski and the state’s most influential business professionals will gather at the Oregon Convention Center for a two-day conference and exhibition showcasing Oregon's strengths in the technology traded-sector, innovative business strategies, and innovations and industries that have Oregon poised for economic growth.

  • March 5, 2004 -- East County Economic Summit: The Oregon Business Plan and East County Businesses. Sponsored by the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce, a dynamic line up of speakers will focus on economic development strategies (including clustering), international and regional trade, education, and workforce development.
  • Feb. 18, 2004 -- Innovation Network Forum: Exciting New Strategies for Driving Economic Development. In this Portland Business Alliance "Forum," learn how an exciting collaboration between businesses, universities and venture capital will ultimately advance innovation and build a stronger Oregon economy.
  • Feb. 11, 2004 -- Economic Development Information Coalition Regional Forum. The forum in Medford will provide information about economic development efforts aimed at promoting greater local and regional participation in the global economy.
  • December 1, 2003 -- Leadership Summit 2003: Shaping Oregon's Economic Future. 1400 business, elected, and community leaders come together for the 2nd Annual Economic Summit at the Oregon Convention Center to hear progress reports on the Oregon Business Plan and outline next steps.
  • Nov. 13, 2003 -- Southern Oregon Economic Summit. Southern Oregon business and government leaders use four of the Oregon Business Plan’s initiatives--Streamlining Permitting & Regulation, Refocusing Economic Development, Benefiting from Our Forest Resources, Industrial Land Development--to craft implementation strategies unique to Southern Oregon.
  • Oct. 29, 2003 -- Silicon Forest Forum: Session I. A full day of the best ideas, guidance and commentary on capital raising, changes in the venture community and M&A planning from leading CEOs, VCs, investment bankers and visionaries from the Pacific Northwest and Silicon Valley.
  • Oct. 10, 2003 -- Oregon Values & Beliefs: What Oregonians Care About, Believe In, and Want for the Future of the State. Duncan Wyse, President of the Oregon Business Council and Joann Waller, Executive Director of the Oregon Education Association, join City Club to present the results of the Oregon Values & Beliefs survey and to discuss the implications for the future of the state.
  • Oct. 6-23, 2003 -- Oregon Values & Beliefs Regional Workshops: Past, Present, Future.  The Oregon School Boards Association is sponsoring 6 regional meetings on the 2002 Oregon Values and Beliefs Survey. The Survey, funded by the Oregon Business Council, Oregon Education Association, Oregon Public Employees'-SEIU and OSBA, sought the opinions of over 2,600 Oregonians--what do they value most?
  • Oct. 2, 2003 -- 2003 NW Wireless and Security Conference. The event, hosted by RAINS and the Portland Business Alliance, will address the increased local interest in wireless technologies and solutions, information and Homeland Security opportunities.
  • Sept. 24, 2003 -- OECDD, SWIFT IV Innovation & Technology Conference. Oregon researchers and businesses interested in tapping some of the $1.6 billion available through two popular federal grant programs will hear program managers from 12 federal agencies explain how to apply for the funds.
  • Sept. 5, 2003 -- Restoring Oregon's Economy: Business Innovation and Law. A forum at the World Trade Center with many of the state's leading political, business, legal, and education figures to discuss the connections between business innovation and law.
  • Aug. 21-22, 2003 -- Eastern Oregon Rural Summit 2003. A two-day conference in Burns hosted by the newly formed Eastern Oregon Rural Alliance to develop solutions to help the state's rural economy.
  • May 27, 2003 -- Leadership Summit Update. 350 business and political leaders (including Senator Ron Wyden, Governor Ted Kulongoski, State Senate President Peter Courtney, and State House Speaker Karen Minnis) convene at Willamette University to assess progress on Oregon Business Plan and discuss next steps.
  • December 9, 2002 -- Leadership Summit 2002: Shaping Oregon Economic Future. Over 1,300 business and political leaders come together at the Oregon Convention Center to help form a common economic agenda for the state... the Oregon Business Plan.
  • Fall 2002 -- Oregon Business Plan Regional Meetings. Local business and political leaders in Medford, Portland, Eugene, and Bend discuss a wide range of ideas and recommendations for the future of Oregon's economy and help inform the content of the Oregon Business Plan.
