People Make the Economy Go
The growing
complexities of technology and the work process confer a premium
on skilled, talented people. This, in turn, calls for first-rate
education systems. Employers want to locate near pools of
well-educated workers. Employees value strong schools for
their children, and they want continuing education opportunities
for their own job security and advancement. Talented graduates
fuel the economy. In addition, a quality education system
can uplift segments of the Oregon population, as well as communities
throughout the state that have had the greatest difficulty
connecting with opportunities in the new economy.
As shown in the attached quadrant, the Oregon Business Plan
is analyzing what we can do to strengthen this aspect of our
economy in several areas, principally K-12 and higher education,
technical education, adult literacy, and preschool education.
Improvement in the K-12 system and redesign of the state’s
investments in the entire education continuum (preK-20) receive particular attention.
